Primary School No. 1 in Hostomel, Kyiv oblast, has reopened after a major EU-financed renovation supported through the European Investment Bank’s Ukraine Recovery Programme. The school was heavily damaged during Russia’s full-scale invasion, and the reconstruction marks an important step in restoring essential education infrastructure in a community that experienced some of the earliest and most severe impacts of the war.
The €613,000 renovation, funded with €511,000 from the EIB and €102,000 in local contributions, has significantly improved the school’s capacity and facilities. It can now accommodate 120 pupils, nearly double the previous number of 67, reducing the need for children to study in neighbouring areas.
The upgraded school includes energy-efficiency improvements, a backup power supply, and modernised learning environments. New spaces for digital education, robotics, and arts have also been introduced, alongside structural repairs such as new windows, doors, insulation, and refurbished classrooms.
Officials from Ukraine and the European Union described the reopening as a symbol of recovery and resilience, highlighting the role of international cooperation in restoring essential services. The project is part of broader EU–EIB recovery efforts in Ukraine, which focus on rebuilding schools, hospitals, housing, and critical infrastructure across affected regions.
