In response to recent flooding in Afghanistan, the European Union has provided €175,000 (over 13 million Afghani) in humanitarian assistance to support vulnerable communities across several affected provinces, including Badghis, Farah, Ghor, Helmand, Herat, Kandahar, Logar, and Uruzgan. The funding is expected to directly benefit around 12,000 people who have been impacted by the disaster.
The assistance will be delivered through the Afghan Red Crescent, focusing on urgent relief measures such as cash assistance for immediate needs, emergency shelter supplies including tents and blankets, and essential household items. It will also support access to clean water, hygiene kits, and basic healthcare services to address both immediate survival needs and prevent disease outbreaks in affected areas.
This support forms part of the European Union’s contribution to the Disaster Response Emergency Fund managed by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. The fund allows rapid deployment of resources during emergencies when national societies require immediate financial support to respond to crises such as floods and other disasters.
The European Union remains one of the largest humanitarian donors in Afghanistan, with more than €162 million already allocated in the current year to humanitarian partners. Earlier contributions also include €250,000 provided to support displacement responses linked to ongoing conflict, along with EU-funded humanitarian flights transporting critical supplies, including nutrition aid, to crisis-hit regions.
Overall, the EU’s humanitarian approach in Afghanistan is focused on saving lives, reducing suffering, and supporting dignity for people affected by both natural disasters and conflict. Through its humanitarian operations and partnerships with organizations such as the IFRC, the EU continues to provide large-scale emergency assistance based on assessed needs, reaching millions of vulnerable people globally each year.
