The European Investment Bank (EIB) Group and Santander have launched a major financing initiative that will provide €1.43 billion in funding for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and mid-cap companies across Spain. The investment aims to improve business competitiveness, accelerate the green transition, support job creation, and expand financing opportunities for women-led businesses.
The EIB Group, through the European Investment Bank and the European Investment Fund (EIF), has invested €876 million in a new Santander securitisation transaction. The agreement will enable Santander to increase lending to Spanish businesses, helping them manage liquidity needs, invest in growth, and overcome challenges linked to inflation, high energy costs, and elevated interest rates.
A key focus of the initiative is supporting women entrepreneurs and businesses primarily owned or managed by women. Around €108 million of the financing will be dedicated to these companies, while more than €162 million will support projects related to sustainability and the green transition.
The financing agreement is expected to strengthen Spain’s SME sector, which plays a critical role in driving innovation, employment, and economic growth. By improving access to capital, the initiative will help businesses expand operations, retain talent, and invest in sustainable solutions.
The transaction includes approximately €476 million from the European Investment Bank and €400 million from the European Investment Fund, alongside additional private investors. It also represents the first securitisation transaction in Spain where collateral is directly embedded in the securitisation notes through an EIF guarantee.
The partnership demonstrates how financial instruments such as securitisation can unlock private investment, reduce financing risks, and channel capital toward businesses and sustainability-focused projects. It also supports broader European priorities, including climate action, economic cohesion, and the development of the EU savings and investments union.
EIB Group representatives highlighted the importance of improving access to finance for SMEs and mid-cap companies, particularly those working on sustainable projects and those led by women entrepreneurs. Santander said the partnership will help strengthen support for Spanish businesses and contribute to long-term economic development.
Through this collaboration, the EIB Group and Santander aim to provide businesses with the resources needed to innovate, grow, and contribute to a more competitive and sustainable Spanish economy.
