The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), UN Women, and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) convened a roundtable in Tripoli titled “Amplifying Women’s Priorities within the Structured Dialogue” to mark National Libyan Women’s Day. The event brought together members of the Libyan Women Caucus, municipal representatives, civil society actors, and international partners to strengthen collective efforts in advancing women’s priorities in governance, security, economic participation, national reconciliation, and human rights.
Participants highlighted the significance of women’s participation in the Structured Dialogue process, noting that representation has reached 35 per cent, which was described as an important milestone for more inclusive political engagement in Libya. The discussion emphasized the need to move beyond numerical representation and ensure that women’s priorities are fully reflected in political recommendations and outcomes.
Speakers also addressed ongoing barriers to women’s meaningful participation, including structural inequalities, restrictive social norms, and violence against women in public life. Members of the dialogue stressed that sustained efforts are required to transform participation into genuine influence in decision-making processes.
The roundtable underscored the importance of stronger coordination between women leaders, civil society organizations, and institutional stakeholders to build a more inclusive and equitable society. Participants called for continued awareness-raising efforts and greater international support to ensure women’s safe and meaningful participation in public life at all levels.
UNSMIL, UN Women, and UNDP reaffirmed their commitment to supporting Libyan women as leaders and decision-makers and to promoting their full, equal, and safe participation in the country’s political future.
