The European Investment Bank (EIB) and the European Investment Fund (EIF), together known as the EIB Group, have partnered with Ameriabank to expand access to finance for micro, small, and medium‑sized enterprises (MSMEs) in Armenia. The initiative involves a partial portfolio guarantee that will enable Ameriabank to build a portfolio of new loans worth up to €106.25 million, supporting business growth and resilience.
This marks the second direct operation between the EIB and Ameriabank, aimed at improving access to affordable funding for Armenian MSMEs. The operation is expected to benefit around 900 businesses and sustain more than 5,000 jobs, contributing to private‑sector growth and economic development in the country.
The signing ceremony in Yerevan was attended by Ameriabank CFO Hovhannes Toroyan, EIB Vice‑President Karl Nehammer, and EU Ambassador to Armenia Vassilis Maragos. Nehammer emphasized that small businesses are the backbone of Armenia’s economy and that access to finance is crucial for their growth. Ambassador Maragos highlighted the initiative as part of the EU’s broader efforts to promote sustainable development, competitiveness, and innovation under the EU–Armenia Strategic Agenda.
Ameriabank reaffirmed its commitment to supporting small businesses, noting that the partnership will allow more entrepreneurs to access the financial support they need to expand and contribute to Armenia’s economy. The guarantee is backed by the EU4Business Guarantee Facility, which shares financial risk and enables institutions to offer more accessible financing terms.
This initiative reflects the EIB Group’s wider role in supporting EU policy priorities, including climate action, digitalization, and social infrastructure, while mobilizing private investment for innovative projects. For Armenia, the partnership represents a practical step toward strengthening economic resilience, fostering innovation, and creating new opportunities for jobs and growth.
