Hollywood Foundation has increased its investment in the 2026 Bambelela Business Awards to R1.135 million, providing significant financial and developmental support to micro, small and medium enterprises in KwaZulu-Natal. Now in its third year, the initiative focuses on uplifting township and rural businesses, where access to funding and structured support is often limited.
The programme attracted strong interest, with 128 MSMEs selected through a competitive application process from various regions including eThekwini, Empangeni, Richards Bay, Pietermaritzburg, Greytown, Port Shepstone and Ulundi. Notably, women-owned enterprises made up 66 percent of participants, highlighting the growing influence of female entrepreneurs in driving local economic growth and community development.
The increased funding, up from R1 million in previous years, will be allocated to 20 high-potential businesses that demonstrate both commercial viability and meaningful community impact. The initiative aims to strengthen entrepreneurship, promote job creation, and contribute to sustainable economic development across underserved communities.
According to foundation representatives, the awards showcase the resilience and innovation of entrepreneurs operating in challenging environments. By investing in small businesses, the programme seeks to enhance economic participation and provide opportunities for long-term growth in regions facing structural constraints.
The initiative has also received support from government leadership, with KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thami Ntuli emphasizing the importance of partnerships between public and private sectors in fostering inclusive development and expanding economic opportunities.
Top winners of the 2026 awards included Hala Lisa (Pty) Ltd, which secured first place with R145,000, followed by Pitchbright (Pty) Ltd with R115,000, and Makoti Boot Camp (Pty) Ltd, which received R85,000. These businesses were recognized for their innovation, growth potential, and positive impact within their communities.
The Bambelela Business Awards continue to play a key role in supporting township and rural economies by providing not only funding but also development opportunities and access to networks that help entrepreneurs build sustainable and resilient businesses.
