Access to safe and reliable water remains a critical challenge in Somalia, particularly in drought-prone regions where it directly affects livelihoods, food security, and resilience. In response, a partnership between the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Saudi Fund for Development (SFD) has been advancing practical and scalable solutions. Through investments in solar-powered water systems and community-based resource management, the collaboration is addressing immediate humanitarian needs while also building long-term resilience. Supported by Saudi Arabia’s broader commitment to development and humanitarian assistance, the initiative is expanding access to safe water in some of the country’s most vulnerable areas.
SFD’s engagement in Somalia is driven by principles of solidarity, human-centered development, and sustainability. The organization emphasizes projects that strengthen communities while responding to urgent challenges such as water scarcity. Its partnership with UNDP is particularly significant as it combines immediate relief efforts with long-term development goals, ensuring that water access solutions are both effective and sustainable.
A key component of this collaboration is the deployment of solar-powered boreholes, which have already provided safe drinking water to at least 23,000 people in regions such as Puntland and northeast Somalia. The initiative is part of a broader Saudi-funded programme focused on mitigating water scarcity, improving food security, and supporting agricultural productivity. With additional boreholes under construction, the project aims to reach around 120,000 people across drought-affected districts, while also strengthening local capacity to manage water resources for lasting impact.
Looking ahead, SFD plans to build on the success of these water initiatives by expanding its collaboration with Somalia into other areas of development. While water access remains a priority, the organization is also exploring opportunities in climate-resilient infrastructure and community-led resource management. Through continued partnerships with UNDP and local stakeholders, SFD aims to contribute to Somalia’s long-term development and enhance its ability to withstand future environmental and economic challenges.
