The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has received a contribution of 2,400 metric tons of rice from the Republic of Korea to support vulnerable families across Syria. The shipment has already arrived at WFP warehouses, and distribution is currently under way. This assistance is expected to help approximately 1.2 million people for one month, strengthening ongoing efforts to address food insecurity in the country.
WFP described the Republic of Korea’s support as an important contribution that helps the agency maintain timely and effective food assistance across Syria. According to Marianne Ward, WFP Country Director and Representative in Syria, consistent support from partners like the Republic of Korea enables the organization to plan ahead and respond more efficiently to the needs of the most vulnerable communities.
The Republic of Korea has been a longstanding partner of WFP in Syria, regularly providing in-kind rice contributions that help sustain food assistance operations. In 2025, the country significantly expanded its support by making its largest-ever contribution to WFP’s Syria response, providing $10 million. This funding allowed WFP to deliver six months of cash-based assistance to 94,500 people, with each family receiving $65 per month to purchase food through a network of 300 contracted retailers across 12 governorates.
The cash-based assistance model helped families meet their food needs with greater dignity, flexibility, and stability by allowing them to choose food items directly from local retailers. This approach not only supported vulnerable households but also contributed to local markets in areas affected by ongoing humanitarian challenges.
H.E. Gyusuk Geon, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Syria, said the latest contribution reflects the country’s continued commitment to supporting humanitarian efforts in Syria, where millions of people still face severe hardship amid prolonged instability. He reaffirmed the Republic of Korea’s intention to continue working with WFP and other international organizations to reduce suffering, strengthen food security, and build resilience among affected communities.
With humanitarian needs in Syria remaining high and available resources under pressure, WFP emphasized that strong and sustained partnerships are essential to ensuring lifesaving assistance continues to reach those who need it most. As the world’s largest humanitarian organization, WFP continues to provide emergency food assistance while also helping communities move toward greater stability and recovery.
