The Maier Foundation has donated $150,000 to West Virginia State University (WVSU) to expand scholarship opportunities for students. The grant was announced during the university’s Day of Giving and Founders Day celebrations and will support both immediate financial aid and long-term scholarship funding.
Of the total contribution, $50,000 will provide direct scholarship support for students from West Virginia who will attend WVSU during the 2026–2027 academic year. The remaining $100,000 will strengthen the endowment of the Allan L. McVey Scholarship Fund, which was established in 2013 to assist students from the state in pursuing higher education at the university. The fund is named after WVSU alumnus Allan L. McVey, who currently serves as West Virginia Insurance Commissioner.
WVSU President Ericke S. Cage thanked the foundation for the contribution, describing the donation as a transformational investment that supports educational excellence and student success. According to university leaders, the funding will help create new opportunities for students while strengthening academic programmes and expanding access to higher education.
The Maier Foundation, a private nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing higher education in West Virginia, said the grant aligns with its mission to support students across the state. Chairman Brad Rowe noted that the foundation’s board was eager to fund need-based scholarships that help remove financial barriers and allow students to focus on their studies.
The donation also contributes to WVSU’s State of Tomorrow Capital Campaign, which aims to raise $25 million to enhance student experiences, strengthen academic programmes, expand campus resources, and support the university’s long-term role in the state’s development. Trey Jones, Vice President for University Advancement and President of the WVSU Foundation, said the foundation’s generosity reflects growing momentum behind the campaign and will help expand scholarship opportunities for current and future students.
