The Government of Iraq and UNRWA have formalized a multi-year strategic partnership to support Palestine Refugees across the Middle East. Signed in Baghdad by Shorsh Khalid Said, Undersecretary for Multilateral and Legal Affairs, and UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini, the agreement commits US$30 million over three years (2026–2028) to sustain essential services, including education and healthcare, for millions of refugees in Gaza, the West Bank, Syria, Lebanon, and Jordan.
Undersecretary Said emphasized Iraq’s ongoing support for the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people and the government’s determination to strengthen international efforts to alleviate the hardships faced by Palestine Refugees despite regional and global challenges.
Commissioner-General Lazzarini welcomed the agreement, highlighting that predictable, multi-year funding enables UNRWA to plan effectively and maintain critical services. He noted that Iraq’s commitment demonstrates meaningful solidarity with Palestine Refugees and reinforces long-standing international obligations to protect their rights and wellbeing.
