Bread and Water for Africa®’s WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) program is making a transformative impact across sub-Saharan Africa by providing communities with access to clean water, reliable sanitation facilities, and essential hygiene education. These efforts protect students from infectious diseases while enabling them to focus on learning and overall well-being. Access to safe water remains a critical challenge in the region, affecting health, education, economic growth, and gender equality, and the organization’s programs aim to address these interconnected issues.
In 2025, Bread and Water for Africa® completed 84 WASH projects benefiting over 70,300 individuals across eight countries, including Cameroon, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Sierra Leone, Uganda, and Zambia. A standout initiative included a solar-powered water pump at the CARILINO Orphanage in Kinshasa, DRC, providing clean water to more than 5,340 children and community members while fostering broader community well-being.
The organization also expanded its school latrine projects, completing essential facilities at Masanduko Primary and Community Day Secondary Schools in Malawi. These latrines now serve 1,095 students, improving health, educational outcomes, and gender equity by offering safe, private sanitation. Complementing these efforts, Bread and Water for Africa® completed 15 spring water protection projects in Uganda, repaired 19 wells in Ethiopia, constructed 11 new wells in Zambia, and repaired and installed wells serving thousands in Malawi and Sierra Leone. Notably, a solar-powered water pump in Gogo Village, Malawi, also supports agricultural irrigation for over 2,000 residents.
Schools in particular have benefited from the program, enabling students to focus on their education without the burdens of water scarcity. In Ethiopia, the repair of a malfunctioning well at Gena Memcha Primary School in the drought-prone Amhara region restored the school feeding program supported by the World Food Programme. Students no longer needed to carry heavy water supplies to school, allowing them to concentrate on learning and improving academic performance.
Through these projects, Bread and Water for Africa® not only addresses immediate water and sanitation challenges but also contributes to long-term community resilience, health, and educational outcomes. These initiatives align closely with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 6, ensuring sustainable access to water and sanitation for all while empowering communities across sub-Saharan Africa.
