The Minns Government is investing over $6.38 million in two major projects in New England, aiming to stimulate the regional economy and create new jobs. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to drive economic development across regional NSW through smart, targeted investments in partnership with local stakeholders. By combining government funding with contributions from local businesses, the total investment for these projects reaches $13.5 million, supporting training, skills development, and employment opportunities.
One of the funded projects is the International Flight Training facility in Tamworth, which will receive $6.61 million for major upgrades, including new lighting, HVAC systems, and other infrastructure improvements. These upgrades will enhance the facility’s capacity to train over 200 pilots annually, strengthen the Tamworth Aviation Precinct as a leading pilot training hub in Australia and the Asia-Pacific, and generate both direct and indirect business opportunities. The NSW Government is contributing $5 million, with the Tamworth Council adding $1.61 million to the project.
The second project involves ABC CAN, a medicinal cannabis manufacturing company based in Armidale, which will receive $6.93 million to upgrade its cultivation, processing, and storage facilities. These improvements will enhance operational efficiency, ensure high-quality production, and prepare the company for domestic and international export demand. The investment will create 20 new jobs in addition to ABC CAN’s existing 80 staff, while also expanding in-house training programs to develop specialised skills in cultivation and manufacturing. The NSW Government will contribute $1.38 million, and ABC CAN will provide $5.55 million to support the project.
Investments through the Regional Development Trust reflect the Minns Government’s approach to funding shovel-ready regional projects that create jobs, attract fresh investment, and enhance infrastructure. Minister for Regional NSW, Tara Moriarty, emphasized that these investments support local businesses, generate employment, and improve essential services, while also strengthening NSW’s position in global aviation training and supporting the growth of the medicinal cannabis industry.
Local stakeholders have expressed strong support for the projects. Tamworth Region Mayor Russell Webb highlighted the region’s suitability for pilot training and the importance of upgraded infrastructure for regional economic growth. ABC CAN’s CFO, Max Taylor, noted that the grant endorses the company’s contribution to regional development, job creation, and the production of high-quality, Australian-grown medicinal cannabis for local and international markets.
Together, these initiatives exemplify how government and private sector collaboration can drive sustainable economic growth, enhance regional capabilities, and foster long-term resilience in New England’s communities.
