As humanitarian needs escalate across Sudan, the Republic of Türkiye, through its Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD), has donated 30,000 family tents to the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to support communities displaced by ongoing conflict. This represents the largest in-kind shelter contribution IOM has received for Sudan to date.
IOM Director General Amy Pope emphasized the significance of the donation, noting that many families in Sudan lack even basic protection. The tents will enable IOM and its partners to expand shelter assistance, providing displaced families with safer living conditions and a measure of security as they begin to rebuild their lives.
The donation comes amid one of the world’s most severe humanitarian crises, with 11.6 million people urgently needing shelter under the Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan, while only 9.4 percent of requirements are currently met. Millions of families have been uprooted, often arriving in overcrowded or makeshift sites without adequate protection, exposed to extreme weather, disease, and insecurity.
Following a visit to Sudan, DG Pope highlighted the critical shortage of shelter supplies, prompting a partnership between IOM and AFAD that led to the rapid mobilization of this large-scale contribution. Humanitarian access remains highly constrained in parts of Sudan, particularly in Darfur and Kordofan, where many communities continue to receive limited assistance.
The tents, delivered with additional support from the Sudan Humanitarian Fund, will bolster Sudan’s shelter response and help IOM reach families in some of the hardest-to-access areas. The contribution also draws attention to the urgent shelter needs across the country. Continued support is essential, as shelter represents the first step toward safety and recovery for families who have lost their homes. Türkiye’s donation provides critical relief at a crucial time, and IOM continues to call on partners to support displaced communities across Sudan.
