MCFA is supporting Sun King, an African off-grid energy company, to expand its operations in Zambia and scale access to clean electric cooking solutions for households. With approximately EUR 1.2 million in funding, Sun King plans to offer electric induction stoves to grid-connected urban and peri-urban customers. The stoves feature smart metering technology that records energy usage, enables pay-as-you-go payment options, and provides accurate data on avoided carbon emissions, allowing households to make small, regular payments instead of large upfront purchases.
Founded in 2007, Sun King—formerly Greenlight Planet Zambia—has provided clean, off-grid energy solutions and began operating in Zambia in 2021. Since then, it has delivered one million solar kits nationwide, equipping households with reliable and sustainable energy. The company’s approach, previously applied to solar power systems for low-income homes and businesses, is now being extended to clean cooking, making induction stoves safe and affordable for households and small businesses.
With MCFA support, Sun King aims to deploy up to 45,000 electric induction stoves across Zambia by the end of 2029, benefiting an estimated 225,000 people. The funding will enable the company to leverage its expertise, sales network, and experience to accelerate the transition to cleaner, healthier cooking practices.
The Modern Cooking Facility for Africa (MCFA) promotes access to higher-tier clean cooking solutions, and Sun King Zambia was selected under the second funding round (MCFA2) of the Zambian programme. The selection involved third-party evaluations by independent experts and a detailed due diligence process conducted by Danish Energy Management in consortium with LFS Advisory, ensuring that the funding supports high-impact, scalable solutions.
