The Ontario government has welcomed an $85 million investment from Sandvik, a global engineering group, to establish a state-of-the-art maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) facility in Greater Sudbury. The project will sustain 400 existing jobs and create more than 60 new positions, reinforcing Northern Ontario’s leadership in next-generation tools and technologies to support critical mineral processing across strategic industries. This investment is part of a broader week in which Ontario announced over $1 billion in new investments, expected to generate more than 770 jobs province-wide.
Ontario’s Minister of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade, Vic Fedeli, emphasized the significance of Sandvik’s investment for strengthening domestic supply chains, enhancing workforce productivity, and positioning the province at the forefront of industry transformation. The new facility will serve as a regional hub with workshops, warehousing, and office space to support equipment rebuilds, component repairs, field operations, and servicing for battery-electric vehicles, addressing growing domestic and international demand for critical minerals. Ontario is supporting the initiative with up to $4 million in funding through the Invest Ontario Fund.
Peter Corcoran, Sandvik’s Vice President of Sales Area Canada, highlighted that the facility will provide a modern, collaborative, and future-ready work environment that aligns with Canada’s priorities in electrification and sustainability. The expanded capabilities will enhance infrastructure and reinforce Sandvik’s position as a trusted partner for customers across the mining industry.
Ontario has been actively fostering a resilient and competitive economy by lowering taxes, reducing red tape, and making strategic investments, resulting in $113 billion in foreign direct investments and one million new jobs since 2018. The province’s manufacturing sector, employing over 800,000 people, and its mining supply and services sector, which employs more than 40,000 people and contributes $3.9 billion annually to GDP, remain key drivers of economic strength.
Sandvik’s choice of Greater Sudbury for its new global flagship centre highlights the region’s expertise in mining and advanced manufacturing. Local leaders, including Ontario ministers and the Mayor of Greater Sudbury, emphasized the facility’s role in supporting clean technology, battery-electric vehicle innovation, and the next generation of sustainable mining, reinforcing the province’s strategic position in global supply chains and critical minerals development.
