The Sustainability Fund is now open for applications from community organisations, schools, social enterprises, and businesses for projects that align with Christchurch City Council’s climate change objectives and targets. The Fund seeks to support initiatives that address climate challenges, help communities understand and prepare for climate impacts, promote a just transition to a low-emission economy, and protect the natural environment and cultural heritage.
In the previous funding round, the Fund supported 33 community-led climate projects, including initiatives promoting sustainable transport, restoring biodiversity, cleaning waterways, controlling predators, and reducing waste. Notable projects included bush and bird restoration in Morgans Valley, improving water quality at Te Wharau stream and Lyttelton Harbour, dune restoration and predator control at Waimairi Beach, and marine sustainability workshops in community libraries.
John Filsell, Head of Community Support and Partnerships, emphasized that the Fund encourages collaborative projects that foster partnerships, demonstrate long-term and community-wide benefits, introduce innovative approaches, and ensure inclusivity and equity. Applications for the Sustainability Fund close on 23 January 2026, and interested applicants are advised to review the guidance and eligibility requirements before applying.
