Medway is set to benefit from the UK government’s announcement of an £84 million national boost aimed at addressing rough sleeping and homelessness. As part of this initiative, Medway Council will receive an additional £533,498 to support local families and prevent homelessness during the winter months.
Of this allocation, £425,534 is designated for initiatives focused on tackling and preventing homelessness and rough sleeping, while over £85,000 will support Medway’s partnerships with voluntary, community, and faith sector organisations. These funds are intended to strengthen local services and enhance collaborative efforts across the community.
A further £107,964 has been allocated specifically to provide assistance to children and families experiencing homelessness, ensuring that vulnerable young residents receive targeted support.
Cllr Louwella Prenter, Medway Council’s Portfolio Holder for Housing and Homelessness, welcomed the funding, emphasizing that it will enhance existing efforts to support the most vulnerable residents. She highlighted the importance of prioritizing children and families while also reinforcing the critical work of voluntary and charitable organisations. This approach aligns with the council’s Housing and Rough Sleeping Strategy, known as the One Medway approach, which focuses on sharing resources, expertise, and knowledge to effectively tackle homelessness.
