Nepal’s recent challenges and achievements were framed as part of a broader call for strengthened multilateral action. Ambassador Thapa highlighted the youth-led political movement earlier this month, known as the “Gen-Z protests,” which demanded transparent governance, equal opportunities, and an end to corruption. While he praised the aspirations of young Nepalese for a fair, just, and prosperous nation, he also expressed concern over the violence that resulted in loss of life and damage to public infrastructure during the demonstrations.
He noted key political milestones following the protests, including the appointment of Nepal’s first female Prime Minister and the upcoming general elections in March 2026. These developments were described as steps toward consolidating democracy, rebuilding institutions, and restoring public trust.
Addressing global concerns, Ambassador Thapa warned of rising military expenditures, unmet sustainable development commitments, and the escalating climate crisis. He stressed the need for revitalized multilateral institutions, including the UN, to respond effectively to international challenges. He also referenced ongoing conflicts worldwide, including in Ukraine, Sudan, and the Sahel, highlighting the heavy toll on civilians in Gaza and calling for the immediate release of hostages, including a Nepalese student taken by Hamas during the October 7 attacks in Israel.
Ambassador Thapa emphasized the importance of accelerated progress toward the 2030 Agenda and ambitious climate action, including emissions reduction and scaling up renewable energy. He also called for fairer global representation in international financial institutions and the Security Council, urging them to be more inclusive, transparent, and accountable.
Concluding his address, he reflected on the UN’s 80-year role as a beacon of peace, justice, human rights, and development, and urged collective responsibility: “When the United Nations succeeds, humanity as a whole succeeds. When it falters, it is the innocent and the vulnerable who bear the heaviest cost. Let us stand together, united and determined, to ensure enduring peace and prosperity in the world.”
