On September 26, 2025, Canada’s Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, the Honourable Tim Hodgson, announced an investment of over $1.44 million to support 10 projects under Natural Resources Canada’s Global Forest Leadership Program, implemented through the International Model Forest Network. The funding aims to strengthen sustainable forest management, restore degraded ecosystems, and enhance local livelihoods across multiple regions worldwide.
In Morocco, the Mediterranean Model Forest Network – Ifrane will use $150,000 to rehabilitate forest ecosystems and adapt traditional practices to preserve natural resources in the Ifrane Model Forest. In Cameroon, the African Model Forest Network – FOMOD will receive $100,000 to improve food security, promote agroforestry, conserve biodiversity, and strengthen resilience to climate change in the Dja et Mpomo Model Forest. Another project in Cameroon, Regional Model Forest Network Africa – CAMAMF, will use $100,000 to conserve natural resources and develop local economies in the Campo Ma’an Model Forest.
In Asia, Kasetsart University in Thailand will receive $350,000 to advance sustainable forest landscape management through graduate-level education and training programs under the Regional Model Forest Network Asia – KUFF project. The Philippines hosts multiple initiatives, including the ULOT Watershed Model Forest in Paranas, which will use $125,000 for local capacity building and support of a nature school, and the Carood Watershed Model Forest in Candijay, which will receive $125,000 for mangrove and forest restoration while promoting sustainable livelihoods and empowering youth and women.
Additional projects in Indonesia, Thailand, India, and Switzerland aim to support community-led environmental stewardship, revive traditional forest-based livelihoods, restore degraded forests and plantations, and implement place-based forest restoration interventions. Funding amounts for these projects range from approximately $124,000 to $125,000. Together, these initiatives demonstrate Canada’s commitment to global forest conservation, sustainable development, and capacity building for local communities managing natural resources.
