The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) has launched the Regional Programme for Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) 2026–2030, a five-year framework designed to accelerate sustainable industrial growth, innovation, and economic transformation across the region.
Introduced during the UNIDO Regional Conference in Montevideo, Uruguay, the program provides a roadmap to help Latin American and Caribbean countries strengthen their industrial capabilities and become global leaders in sustainable production. The framework was developed through consultations with more than 300 stakeholders and responds to priorities identified by UNIDO member states.
The initiative focuses on shifting economies from resource-based growth models toward innovation-driven development by improving technology adoption, building skills, encouraging investment, and strengthening regional innovation ecosystems.
The program addresses the diverse needs of countries across the region, including middle-income economies, small island developing states, landlocked developing countries, and high-income nations. It aims to create industrial systems that are more resilient, environmentally responsible, and capable of generating inclusive economic opportunities.
Key priorities include strengthening industrial policies, supporting low-carbon manufacturing, promoting circular economy practices, expanding digital transformation through artificial intelligence and Industry 4.0 technologies, increasing renewable energy use, improving energy efficiency, and supporting small and medium-sized enterprises.
UNIDO will implement the framework through technical assistance, policy support, knowledge sharing, innovation development, skills training, and stronger partnerships. The program will also use the SDG 9 Accelerator platform to encourage collaboration and promote sustainable industrial development.
A major focus of the initiative is ensuring that industrial growth contributes to social inclusion by creating quality employment opportunities, particularly for women and young people. Through South–South and Triangular Cooperation and country-level partnerships, UNIDO aims to help governments build stronger industries while protecting natural resources.
The Regional Programme for Latin America and the Caribbean 2026–2030 represents a long-term effort to position the region as a hub for sustainable manufacturing, innovation, and inclusive economic growth while responding to global challenges and emerging industrial trends.
