A new global study has found that the international trade in reptile skins for leather is biologically sustainable for most commonly traded species and is not a major driver of extinction risk. The research, published in Nature, analyzed more than 70 million legally traded reptile skins between 2000 and 2020 to examine the impact of commercial harvesting on wild populations.
Led by an international team of more than 40 conservation scientists and herpetologists from over 30 institutions, the study combined global trade records, species assessments, ecological data, and wildlife management information to evaluate whether current levels of reptile skin trade are compatible with long-term species survival.
Researchers examined 46 reptile species commonly used in the leather industry, including crocodiles, large snakes, and lizards. Most of these species are classified as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List and have stable or growing populations. The findings suggest that regulated international trade, when supported by monitoring and management systems, can coexist with conservation goals.
According to the study, commercial harvesting itself is not a primary threat to most traded reptile species. The trade is largely concentrated on a limited number of abundant species that are managed through established conservation frameworks across many regions.
The researchers identified other factors, including habitat loss, climate change, and emerging diseases, as more significant threats to reptile populations worldwide. They emphasized that conservation resources should focus more heavily on vulnerable species facing these broader environmental pressures.
The study also highlights the potential role of sustainable wildlife trade in supporting local communities that depend on reptile-related industries. However, researchers noted that the assessment focused only on biological sustainability and did not evaluate animal welfare concerns, environmental impacts of leather production, or social issues within supply chains.
Experts stressed that continued monitoring, transparent reporting, and strong regulation will remain essential to ensure that reptile leather trade remains sustainable while protecting biodiversity.
