The State of Vermont has awarded more than $3.5 million in Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding to support community projects focused on affordable housing, public infrastructure improvements, senior services, and childcare development.
Announced by Governor Phil Scott and the Vermont Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD), the $3.547 million investment will fund seven projects across the state through the Vermont Community Development Program. The grants are designed to help communities address local needs while creating long-term benefits for residents.
The funding will support the redevelopment of community spaces, expansion of affordable housing, improvements to senior living facilities, and upgrades to essential infrastructure. Projects receiving support include the transformation of a former high school in Rochester into a childcare center, senior center, and commercial space for local businesses.
Housing initiatives represent a major portion of the investment. In Hartford, funding will help develop 48 new affordable housing units as part of a larger residential development plan. Additional grants will support the rehabilitation of senior housing facilities in Vernon and Rutland, as well as the construction and renovation of affordable rental homes in Fairlee and Underhill.
Infrastructure improvements are also included in the funding package. The Town of Wheelock will use grant support for engineering studies related to bridges and culverts along Vermont Route 122, while Underhill will invest in water and road infrastructure needed for new housing development.
Governor Phil Scott highlighted the importance of CDBG funding in helping communities complete projects that address critical needs, including housing shortages and infrastructure challenges. DHCD officials noted that the grants will support seniors, families, children, and future generations by improving access to safe housing, childcare services, and modern public facilities.
Through these investments, Vermont aims to strengthen local communities, expand affordable housing opportunities, and improve essential services across the state.
