The European Investment Bank (EIB) has finalized a €290 million financing package to support the construction of Lithuania’s new military base in the Rūdninkai area, strengthening defence infrastructure and regional security in the Baltic region.
The financing covers three major sections of the Rūdninkai Military Town project, which is planned to become a NATO facility and is expected to be operational by the end of 2027. The project represents one of Lithuania’s largest defence infrastructure investments since the country regained independence.
The EIB financing will support the construction of essential facilities, including accommodation, training areas, warehouses, medical centres, roads, hangars, and helipads. The military town will cover 170 hectares and include around 150 buildings along with 11 kilometres of roads.
Located near the strategically important Suwałki Gap, the facility will host a German brigade of approximately 4,000 troops and around 750 civilian personnel. The deployment is considered a significant step in strengthening NATO’s eastern flank and improving regional defence readiness.
The financing package includes a €105 million loan for the first development section and two additional loans totaling around €185 million for other construction phases. The projects are being developed through partnerships involving Lithuanian and Baltic construction companies as well as investment firms.
EIB officials said the project reflects the bank’s growing role in supporting European security and defence-related infrastructure. The investment demonstrates increased cooperation between public institutions, private companies, and international financial organizations to strengthen resilience and preparedness.
Lithuanian defence officials highlighted that the project will accelerate the development of infrastructure needed for the permanent presence of the German brigade while enhancing national defence capabilities and supporting NATO commitments.
Construction of all three project sections will move forward simultaneously, helping ensure timely delivery of the military facility. The Rūdninkai Military Town is expected to become a key strategic asset for Lithuania and a major contribution to European security cooperation.
