The Government of Ireland has approved a €40 million emergency funding package to repair extensive damage to regional and local roads following Storm Chandra earlier in 2026. The announcement was made by the Darragh O’Brien alongside Ministers of State Seán Canney and Jerry Buttimer, under the Department of Transport (Ireland).
The funding aims to restore critical road infrastructure across multiple counties after severe weather caused widespread disruption. Following assessments completed in March 2026, around 130 roads were identified as requiring full reconstruction, while more than 440 roads sustained significant structural damage. Several bridges were also left impassable, affecting connectivity in rural and regional areas.
Storm Chandra, a major weather event impacting Ireland earlier in the year, caused widespread flooding and infrastructure failure, placing additional pressure on already vulnerable local road networks. The new funding package is designed to help local authorities prioritize urgent repairs and ensure safe access for communities and businesses.
According to the government, the investment will be directed toward the most severely affected regions, with allocations distributed across counties including Wexford, Wicklow, Waterford, Kilkenny, Carlow, Laois, Louth, Monaghan, and Tipperary. Wexford and Wicklow received the largest shares due to the scale of damage recorded in those areas.
Officials emphasized that maintaining and restoring regional and local roads is essential not only for public safety but also for supporting rural economies, emergency services, and daily transport needs. The funding is expected to accelerate reconstruction works and improve resilience against future extreme weather events.
The announcement comes alongside Ireland’s broader Regional and Local Roads Grant Programme, which earlier allocated hundreds of millions of euros to road maintenance, safety improvements, drainage, and climate adaptation projects across the country. The latest emergency package reinforces the government’s focus on strengthening infrastructure resilience in response to increasingly severe weather patterns.
With repair works now set to begin across the worst-hit areas, local authorities are expected to prioritize reconstruction of collapsed road sections, restoration of bridge access, and stabilization of flood-damaged routes, helping restore normal connectivity across affected communities.
