Washington DC — June 5, 2026 — The World Bank Group has approved a EUR 191.5 million (US$219.4 million) loan to Türkiye to modernize urban infrastructure and services in the fast-growing cities of Antalya and Konya. The Green and Future Cities Project will address rising demand for public transport, clean water, sanitation, and efficient energy systems, while creating jobs and strengthening climate resilience.
Türkiye’s rapid urbanization has intensified the need for sustainable municipal infrastructure. The project will expand and modernize public transport systems, including tramlines and low-emission vehicles, and upgrade water supply and wastewater treatment facilities. It will also support energy efficiency measures and climate adaptation strategies to improve urban mobility, environmental sustainability, and residents’ quality of life.
World Bank Country Director for Türkiye J. Humberto Lopez emphasized: “Türkiye’s cities are key drivers of economic growth and job creation but also face increasing pressures from rapid urbanization and climate change. This project will help municipalities invest in modern, resilient infrastructure while strengthening their capacity to plan and finance sustainable urban development.”
The initiative will provide technical assistance to İller Bankası A.Ş. (ILBANK) and participating municipalities, helping them prepare bankable, climate-smart investments and strengthen financial management. It will also enhance municipal creditworthiness, laying the groundwork for greater private sector participation in the future.
Aligned with Türkiye’s national development priorities, the project supports both mitigation and adaptation efforts. Investments are expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve energy efficiency, and strengthen resilience against climate risks such as flooding, drought, and extreme heat. By modernizing infrastructure systems and service delivery, the project will help cities withstand future shocks while promoting sustainable and inclusive urban growth.
