The Greater Worcester Community Foundation is celebrating its 50th anniversary with a $2 million funding package aimed at addressing key social challenges across Worcester County, including affordable housing, childcare, food security, immigrant support, maternal health, and education.
The one-time investment represents a 50% increase in the foundation’s annual discretionary grantmaking. It includes $1.05 million in direct grants to five nonprofit organizations and an additional $950,000 for new foundation-led initiatives planned in the coming months.
Among the largest allocations, Edward Street Child Services received $250,000 for its HOME3 initiative, which focuses on renovating housing units to create childcare opportunities while supporting pathways to homeownership for providers. Community Legal Aid and Ascentria Immigrant Legal Assistance Program each received $150,000 to help sustain staffing and immigration-related services. The United Way of North Central Massachusetts was awarded $250,000 to develop a regional food transportation network, while Pernet Family Health Service received $250,000 to support home visiting services for newborns and families.
Foundation leadership described the investment as both a milestone celebration and a response to growing community needs. President and CEO Pete Dunn said the initiative builds on 50 years of philanthropic work and aims to expand equitable opportunities across the region.
In addition to direct grants, the foundation is launching three new initiatives: a $250,000 arts program for youth through libraries, a $200,000 emergency scholarship support fund, and a $500,000 revolving loan fund to support affordable housing development projects.
Recipient organizations said the funding will help move long-term projects from planning into implementation, particularly in housing, childcare, and food access systems.
Founded in 1975, the Greater Worcester Community Foundation has grown into a major philanthropic institution in Central Massachusetts, managing a $270 million endowment and distributing more than $186 million in grants since its establishment.
