U.S. Rep. Jimmy Patronis is applauding the preliminary approval of a sweeping congressional bill that would allocate about $580 billion for transportation projects nationwide. The measure, known as the Building Unrivaled Infrastructure and Long-term Development (BUILD) for America’s 250th Act, cleared the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee and now heads to the floor for full consideration.
The bill proposes extensive investments in roads, bridges, railways, and local transportation projects over the next five years. It also establishes new grant programs to support regional infrastructure upgrades while streamlining permitting and environmental reviews to accelerate project delivery.
Patronis, who sits on the transportation panel, emphasized the importance of the funding for Florida, particularly Northwest Florida. He noted that the measure would modernize critical infrastructure and reduce regulatory hurdles that have slowed progress.
One amendment introduced by Patronis aims to ease restrictions on automobile haulers, arguing that outdated weight limits fail to account for today’s heavier electric and hybrid vehicles. He said the change would lower costs and improve efficiency in vehicle transport across the country.
“This is about common sense. Washington’s outdated rules are slowing down American business and driving up costs,” Patronis said. “Vehicles are heavier today due to EV and hybrid technologies, but weight limits haven’t kept up. That means more trucks on the road and higher costs for consumers, which is dumb and has to change.”
While the bill has gained momentum in the House, progress in the Senate has been slower, leaving its final approval uncertain.
