Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) has secured new funding to continue its business decarbonisation work through the Low Carbon Eco Innovatory (LCEI), supporting companies across the Liverpool City Region in reducing carbon emissions and improving sustainability practices. The initiative is aimed at helping local businesses transition toward net zero while also encouraging innovation and long-term economic growth.
The renewed funding will extend the LCEI programme for another year, enabling continued collaboration between LJMU researchers, industry partners, and students. Through this partnership model, businesses are provided with access to academic expertise and applied research support to solve real-world sustainability challenges and implement low-carbon technologies.
The programme focuses on practical decarbonisation solutions, including the development and adoption of energy-efficient processes, cleaner production methods, and innovative technologies that reduce environmental impact. It also supports SMEs in identifying opportunities to cut operational costs while improving environmental performance through targeted interventions and research-led guidance.
Over previous funding phases, the LCEI initiative has already worked with hundreds of businesses across the region, helping them implement carbon reduction strategies and adopt cleaner technologies. The project has delivered measurable environmental benefits, including significant reductions in CO₂ emissions and the introduction of new sustainable business practices across multiple sectors.
Overall, the new funding reinforces LJMU’s role in supporting the Liverpool City Region’s wider ambition to achieve net zero by 2040. The project continues to position universities as key drivers of regional sustainability, bridging the gap between academic research and practical business applications for long-term environmental and economic impact.
