Indiegraf has announced a $5 million program-related investment from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, reinforcing its role as a leading technology provider for independent local journalism. The funding will accelerate Indiegraf’s mission to scale its Operating System to 500 communities, with a pledge to ensure that half of the supported newsrooms serve underrepresented communities.
The investment supports Indiegraf’s Tech for Journalism Program, which provides subsidies of up to 70% to independent news organizations meeting public benefit criteria. Indiegraf has also committed to developing technology that lowers the long-term cost of digital infrastructure, ensuring affordability and directing more revenue to newsroom leaders. Knight Foundation leaders emphasized that local news is an investable asset, capable of serving the public good while attracting socially conscious capital.
Unlike traditional grant or venture funding, this investment model directly links Indiegraf’s financial success with its impact on local news, allowing returns to be recycled into future grantmaking. Indiegraf’s CEO Erin Millar highlighted that the approach promotes robust business fundamentals while ensuring philanthropic capital delivers measurable benefits for local media. Impact investor Vicki Saunders noted that the model reflects a shift toward financing systems change, where returns are measured in ecosystem strength and sustainability.
Indiegraf OS is designed to reduce reliance on single funders, revenue streams, or platforms, helping newsrooms remain resilient and independent. Its tools focus on diversifying revenue, deepening audience trust, and enabling collaboration among newsrooms. Since 2020, more than 180 newsrooms have used Indiegraf to strengthen their operations, generating over $31 million in direct funding.
Knight Foundation was an early supporter of Indiegraf, previously providing $1.56 million to the News Startup Fund, which helped 24 early-stage news organizations grow revenues by more than 450% on average. The new investment builds on this success, positioning Indiegraf to expand its reach and strengthen the future of independent local journalism.
