Governor Abigail Spanberger has announced that Innovative Refrigeration Systems will invest $19 million to expand its Augusta County manufacturing campus. The expansion will support Virginia’s growing biopharma manufacturing sector by strengthening cold chain infrastructure, ensuring medications reach hospitals, pharmacies, and healthcare providers nationwide. The project involves acquiring and renovating an adjacent facility, significantly increasing production capacity and creating 214 new jobs.
The investment will be supported by the Virginia Talent Accelerator Program and Innovative’s apprenticeship programs in welding, electrical trades, and refrigeration technology. Governor Spanberger emphasized that the expansion not only supports biopharma growth but also creates good‑paying career opportunities for Virginians, while reinforcing the state’s commitment to workforce development.
Secretary of Commerce and Trade Carrie Chenery highlighted the alignment between Virginia’s industrial needs and talent solutions, while Innovative President Bob Almon underscored the company’s dedication to community investment, job creation, and advancing natural refrigerants such as ammonia and CO₂. These refrigerants are increasingly important as industries transition away from high‑global‑warming‑potential alternatives.
Local leaders welcomed the expansion, noting its economic impact and contribution to workforce development. Augusta County Board of Supervisors Chair Jeff Slaven praised the reinvestment in local assets, while Senator Chris Head and Delegate Ellen McLaughlin emphasized the importance of creating high‑quality jobs and strengthening advanced manufacturing in the Shenandoah Valley.
The Virginia Economic Development Partnership worked with Augusta County to secure the project, with Governor Spanberger approving a $250,000 grant from the Commonwealth’s Opportunity Fund. Support will also come from the Virginia Talent Accelerator Program, recognized nationally as the top customized workforce training program. This initiative, in collaboration with higher education partners, ensures training and recruitment are tailored to company needs while aligning with international best practices in biopharmaceutical workforce development.
