Ireland’s Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, James Lawless, has announced the opening of applications for the INSPIRE Research Infrastructure Programme. The initiative is designed to strengthen Ireland’s national research and innovation capacity by supporting the development and enhancement of advanced research infrastructure across higher education institutions and research organizations. The programme aims to ensure that researchers have access to modern facilities, equipment, and technological resources needed to conduct world-class scientific research and innovation activities.
The INSPIRE programme forms part of Ireland’s broader strategy to position itself as a global leader in research, technology, and innovation. The government has emphasized that strong research infrastructure is essential for attracting international collaboration, supporting scientific discovery, encouraging industry partnerships, and addressing major societal and economic challenges. Through this initiative, Ireland seeks to create a more competitive and future-focused research ecosystem capable of supporting cutting-edge work in multiple disciplines.
The funding programme will support infrastructure projects across a wide range of sectors, including science, technology, engineering, health, climate research, digital innovation, and emerging technologies. The initiative is expected to enhance collaboration between universities, research centers, and industry partners while also improving opportunities for researchers and students. Officials noted that investment in research infrastructure can help accelerate innovation, strengthen economic growth, and contribute to solving national and global challenges such as sustainability, healthcare, and technological transformation.
Minister Lawless highlighted the importance of maintaining high-quality research environments to support Ireland’s growing knowledge economy. He stated that the INSPIRE programme will help ensure researchers across the country can access state-of-the-art facilities and resources that enable high-impact research outcomes and international competitiveness. The programme also aligns with Ireland’s long-term ambitions to strengthen talent development, scientific excellence, and research commercialization.
Applications for the INSPIRE Research Infrastructure Programme are now open to eligible institutions and organizations involved in research and innovation activities. The government expects the initiative to play a key role in enhancing Ireland’s research capabilities, fostering collaboration, and supporting innovation-driven economic development in the years ahead.
