The Ontario government has announced an investment of more than $14 million to improve critical water infrastructure in Lanark and Frontenac counties. The funding is part of the province’s Municipal Housing Infrastructure Program’s Health and Safety Water Stream, designed to strengthen essential infrastructure, support housing development, and encourage long-term economic growth across Eastern Ontario.
The investment aims to protect existing homes, improve municipal water systems, and help communities prepare for future residential expansion. Provincial officials stated that these infrastructure improvements will also support job creation and strengthen local economies while ensuring residents continue to receive reliable public services.
The Town of Smiths Falls in Lanark County will receive over $13.3 million for a major trunk watermain upgrade and sewer separation project. The initiative is expected to improve water system reliability and service delivery for approximately 1,380 existing homes while supporting future housing opportunities in the region.
In Frontenac County, the Township of North Frontenac will receive more than $1 million to rehabilitate and expand the stormwater management system in the Village of Plevna. The project is intended to enhance community resilience, improve flood protection, and safeguard local homes and infrastructure.
Ontario officials highlighted that the funding forms part of the province’s broader infrastructure and housing strategy aimed at building stronger communities and addressing population growth. The government noted that investments in water, sewer, and stormwater systems are essential to enabling new housing construction and maintaining public safety.
The province also emphasized that the investment supports Ontario’s long-term economic development goals by helping municipalities modernize aging infrastructure while creating conditions for sustainable community expansion. Since 2024, Ontario has invested more than $98 million in infrastructure projects across Lanark and Frontenac counties and the City of Kingston through multiple provincial funding programs.
