The International Organization for Migration (IOM), in partnership with Instituto Vakinha, has launched an innovative real-time disaster response funding model in Brazil aimed at improving the speed and efficiency of humanitarian assistance during emergencies. The initiative seeks to mobilize financial support immediately after disasters occur, helping affected communities receive timely aid while strengthening local disaster response systems.
The partnership combines IOM’s humanitarian expertise with Instituto Vakinha’s digital crowdfunding technology and experience in large-scale emergency fundraising. Vakinha, one of Brazil’s leading online donation platforms, gained national recognition for coordinating major fundraising campaigns during the devastating floods in Rio Grande do Sul, where millions of reais were rapidly mobilized to support affected communities.
The newly launched funding model is designed to provide rapid and flexible financial assistance in the immediate aftermath of disasters such as floods, storms, landslides, and other climate-related emergencies. By enabling real-time collection and distribution of donations, the initiative aims to reduce delays often associated with traditional humanitarian funding mechanisms and improve the overall effectiveness of emergency response operations.
