New Zealand Defence Minister Chris Penk has praised the important role local businesses play in supporting national security and resilience during the Minister of Defence Awards of Excellence to Industry. The awards recognised companies that provide essential equipment, infrastructure, services and operational support to the New Zealand Defence Force and the Ministry of Defence.
The Minister highlighted that Defence depends heavily on strong partnerships with innovative and capable New Zealand businesses, especially in a world facing growing security and operational challenges. More than 800 suppliers across the country contribute goods and services that strengthen supply chain resilience and help ensure Defence remains prepared to respond during emergencies and national crises.
This year’s award recipients included a construction company responsible for building the Maintenance Support Facility at Burnham Military Camp, as well as a manufacturer that developed specialised physical training and combat socks for Defence personnel. These projects demonstrate how local industry contributes practical solutions that directly support military operations and personnel readiness.
The Minister also emphasized the broader economic benefits of the defence industry. Award-winning companies help create jobs, develop specialist expertise, support regional economic growth and increase export opportunities for New Zealand businesses. Defence-related investments are seen as an important driver of innovation across multiple sectors of the economy.
The announcement also linked industry development with the government’s 2025 Defence Capability Plan, which outlines a long-term strategy to significantly increase defence spending over the next eight years. A stronger domestic defence industry is expected to play a key role in delivering future military capabilities and improving national resilience.
In addition, the government confirmed the revitalisation of the Defence Industry Advisory Council, which oversees the awards programme. The Council has updated its membership and Terms of Reference to better align with the government’s defence priorities and economic growth strategy, reinforcing the importance of collaboration between Defence and New Zealand industry.
