Spain has announced a significant increase in its support for global education, pledging at least €25 million to the Global Partnership for Education (GPE) as part of the “Multiply Possibility” campaign. This represents a 25% rise from its previous commitment, underscoring Spain’s growing recognition of education as a foundation for peace, equality, resilience, and social cohesion.
Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez emphasized that Spain’s decision reflects solidarity with the global community, noting that peace is built through prevention, and prevention begins with education. Against a backdrop of escalating conflict, climate shocks, and economic uncertainty, Spain’s pledge signals that education is a central pillar of stability rather than a peripheral investment.
GPE’s CEO Laura Frigenti welcomed Spain’s leadership, highlighting that the pledge demonstrates confidence in GPE’s mission to strengthen public education systems, expand opportunities for young people, and reach children most at risk of being left behind. Spain joins Germany and other partners in supporting GPE’s ambition to mobilize $5 billion in financing and unlock an additional $10 billion for education, aiming to transform learning outcomes for up to 750 million children across more than 90 partner countries.
The campaign also encourages countries to grow their domestic education budgets, promoting sustainable, nationally led systems. Investment in education is seen as a powerful tool to reduce conflict, build resilience against extremism, and foster more cohesive societies. Evidence shows that one extra year of education can reduce the risk of conflict by up to 20 percent, with particularly strong effects when girls and women have equal access to learning.
A fully funded GPE would deliver transformative global benefits, including adding $840 billion to the economy, lifting 23 million people out of poverty, saving $7.7 billion in climate-related damage, and ensuring 204 million more children—half of them girls—attend school. Spain’s €25 million pledge affirms education as a global public good and a strategic investment in a fairer, more stable, and more secure future.
