New Zealand has announced a new round of sanctions targeting malicious cyber actors and others supporting Russia’s war against Ukraine. Foreign Minister Winston Peters confirmed that 20 individuals and entities have been designated, including those enabling Russian cybercrime, spreading anti‑Ukraine propaganda, and supporting the Kremlin’s hybrid warfare tactics.
The sanctions also target an alternative payment provider widely used to evade existing restrictions, as well as contributors to Russia’s military‑industrial complex. Actors from North Korea and Iran who are providing support to Russia’s military have also been included in this package.
Since the Russia Sanctions Act came into force in March 2022, New Zealand has imposed measures on more than 2,000 individuals, entities, and vessels. This marks the 35th round of sanctions, underscoring New Zealand’s continued commitment to holding accountable those who enable Russia’s illegal aggression against Ukraine.
Would you like me to expand on the Russia Sanctions Act itself, the hybrid warfare tactics being referenced, or the role of cyber actors in this conflict?
