Rural Minds has launched a new educational webpage, “Tardive Dyskinesia: What You Need to Know,” to mark Tardive Dyskinesia Awareness Week, which coincides with Mental Health Awareness Month. Supported by Neurocrine Biosciences and Teva Pharmaceutical Industries, the initiative aims to raise awareness of tardive dyskinesia (TD), a movement disorder linked to antipsychotic medications that causes uncontrolled, repetitive movements affecting daily life.
The webpage provides factual information about TD, including an overview of its causes, symptoms, and the importance of early diagnosis and screening. A new video featuring a healthcare professional explains how TD develops, how it can be identified, and why timely screening matters. While virtual screening has limitations compared to in‑person care, it offers a practical option for people in rural areas who face challenges accessing healthcare.
Additional resources on the site include a TD fact sheet, a blog post, a recorded webinar on managing TD in rural America, and links to further information. Rural Minds Founder Jeff Winton emphasized that the content is designed to help people living with TD, especially in rural communities, better understand the condition and available support.
This initiative reflects Rural Minds’ mission to confront stigma and promote mental wellness in rural America, where access to healthcare can be limited. By providing accessible, evidence‑based information, the organization hopes to empower individuals and caregivers to recognize TD and seek appropriate care.
