The African Development Bank (AfDB) and Libya’s Ministry of Transportation have completed a three-day workshop to establish a roadmap for implementing a strategic transport sector study. The initiative is designed to support Libya’s broader economic recovery by improving the efficiency, coordination, and performance of the country’s transport system.
The workshop was held from 15 to 17 April at the AfDB’s North Africa regional office in Tunis. It brought together Bank experts and representatives from key Libyan institutions, including the Ministries of Finance and Transportation, the project executing agency, and the implementation unit. The discussions mainly focused on defining implementation arrangements and outlining the next steps for the project.
The Libyan delegation was led by Issam Abdallah Al-Qouri, Chair of the Preparatory Committee at the Ports and Maritime Transport Authority. It also included officials from the Land Transport Authority, the Roads and Bridges Implementation Authority, and the Ministry of Transportation headquarters, reflecting a coordinated national effort to reform the sector.
The study is funded through a $340,000 grant from the African Development Bank Group’s Middle-Income Country Technical Assistance Fund, along with additional support from the Libyan government. This funding will help develop a strategic transport sector plan aimed at strengthening infrastructure planning and operational efficiency as part of Libya’s ongoing economic recovery reforms.
