The second National Symposium on Social Protection in Lao PDR brought together students, government representatives and development partners to highlight youth-driven innovation in strengthening the country’s social protection system. Held over two days on 8 and 12 December 2025, the event served as a platform to exchange knowledge, celebrate progress and elevate the voices of young people committed to social development.
Organized by the Faculty of Social Sciences of the National University of Laos, the International Labour Organization (ILO) and OXFAM, the symposium featured a student competition as its main highlight. Third- and fourth-year students presented proposals addressing the theme of improving social assistance services and monetary benefit delivery to communities. Their ideas included enhanced payment mechanisms, digital tools to improve accessibility and community outreach models to streamline cash distribution. A panel of judges evaluated the submissions based on innovation, feasibility, relevance and potential benefit to vulnerable groups, underscoring the powerful role young people can play in advancing social protection.
Throughout the event, participants engaged in interactive learning activities such as games, quizzes and hands-on demonstrations at exhibition booths. These elements helped create a dynamic space for students to showcase practical projects and deepen their understanding of social assistance systems. Organizers and partners praised the creativity and commitment of the youth involved, highlighting how their insights bring fresh perspectives to ongoing policy discussions.
The symposium also included high-level policy dialogues on 12 December, connecting student-led ideas with national-level reform conversations. By providing this platform, the event strengthened the link between youth engagement and policymaking and emphasized the importance of integrating student perspectives into future social protection initiatives.
This year’s symposium also coincided with the 70th anniversary of Lao PDR’s membership in the United Nations. As part of the celebrations, Lao youth contributed by designing a commemorative logo, reflecting their creativity, national pride and active role in shaping the country’s future
