The European Union has contributed €25 million through the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) to enhance community resilience and improve nutrition across Afghanistan. The funding targets vulnerable populations, including women, children, and rural communities, with a focus on strengthening agriculture and food value chains to promote health, economic stability, and protection against climate-related risks.
The investment reflects the EU’s commitment to integrated, sustainable solutions, supporting WFP initiatives on climate adaptation and food systems. Community assets such as flood protection walls and irrigation systems will be upgraded to reduce vulnerability to extreme weather, safeguard productive assets, and strengthen economic resilience in affected areas.
EU funding will also build on WFP’s school meals programme to drive local economic development. It will provide training and create livelihood opportunities for women’s associations and youth entrepreneurs, who will supply fresh, fortified snacks to schoolchildren, reinforcing both nutrition and local enterprise.
WFP Representative John Aylieff emphasized that the initiative delivers a triple impact: stronger livelihoods and resilience, enhanced local food systems, and expanded opportunities for women and youth. The partnership highlights the importance of sustained international support in addressing Afghanistan’s ongoing food security and livelihood challenges.
This contribution continues the EU’s long-term support for resilience and school meal programmes in Afghanistan, strengthening the local private sector through local procurement and improving links between humanitarian assistance and development efforts.
