The UK Government has announced a £2 million funding boost to help small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) reduce operating costs through sustainability investments. Provided through the ‘Made Smarter Adoption Programme,’ this funding will support SMEs in adopting energy-efficient technologies such as heating, insulation, and solar power, enabling them to lower energy bills and improve operational efficiency.
This measure is part of the Government’s response to the Willow Review, an independent report led by Small Business Britain and supported by Barclays, which found that 67% of SMEs implementing sustainable practices reported cost reductions. The review seeks to unlock the economic potential of sustainability for the UK’s 5.7 million SMEs, demonstrating clear financial benefits from green initiatives.
Government ministers highlighted how this support delivers both cost savings and business growth. Blair McDougall, Minister for Small Business, noted that sustainability investments allow SMEs to redirect savings toward growth, while Katie White, Minister for Climate, emphasized that clean energy represents a significant economic opportunity, helping SMEs adopt energy-efficient solutions.
The funding complements existing initiatives that support SMEs in transitioning to net zero. Programs such as the Zero Carbon Services Hospitality trial provide small hospitality businesses with free energy usage assessments, generating over £3 million in savings and preventing 2,700 tonnes of carbon emissions annually. Additionally, the rollout of smart meters nationwide helps SMEs manage energy consumption more efficiently.
Leaders from both the public and private sectors welcomed the initiative. Michelle Ovens of Small Business Britain praised the practical support for SMEs in leveraging sustainability for growth, while Barclays’ Abdul Qureshi highlighted opportunities for SMEs to reduce costs and enhance resilience through green finance and climate-focused partnerships.
Overall, this funding forms a key part of the Government’s Plan for Small Business, the most extensive support package in a generation, aimed at helping SMEs grow, innovate, and create jobs while benefiting from both financial savings and environmental sustainability.
