The New Zealand Government has announced a new agreement aimed at strengthening national fuel resilience by securing additional fuel supplies to support the country’s energy security. The deal is designed to increase emergency fuel reserves and ensure greater stability in the event of global supply disruptions, geopolitical instability, or sudden shocks to international fuel markets.
Under the agreement, the government has partnered with fuel supplier Z Energy to secure approximately 90 million litres of additional diesel. This volume is equivalent to around nine days of national diesel supply, significantly boosting New Zealand’s strategic fuel reserves and providing a buffer during potential crises affecting imports or distribution networks.
Officials stated that the fuel will be stored at key infrastructure sites, including facilities such as Marsden Point, to ensure rapid accessibility in case of emergency demand.
