Rural communities in Chile are experiencing a major digital transformation through a United Nations-backed initiative aimed at improving internet connectivity, digital literacy, and access to essential services in underserved territories. The programme focuses particularly on the regions of Ñuble and La Araucanía, where limited digital infrastructure has historically restricted economic opportunities, access to education, healthcare, and agricultural innovation for rural and Indigenous populations.
The initiative seeks to bridge the digital divide by expanding broadband infrastructure and creating public connectivity points in remote communities. Through coordinated efforts involving government institutions, United Nations agencies, and private-sector partners, thousands of residents are expected to gain reliable internet access for the first time. The programme is designed not only to improve connectivity but also to support long-term sustainable development and reduce inequalities in rural areas.
A major focus of the programme is supporting smallholder farmers through digital tools and training. Farmers are being introduced to technologies that can improve agricultural productivity, market access, and sustainability. Digital platforms allow producers to access real-time information, strengthen e-commerce opportunities, and improve the marketing of agricultural products. These technologies are helping rural producers modernize farming practices while increasing resilience against economic and climate-related challenges.
The programme also places strong emphasis on inclusion, particularly for women, Indigenous populations, and young people. Training initiatives are designed to improve digital literacy and help vulnerable groups participate more actively in economic and community development. Women in rural communities are receiving specialized support to strengthen their economic independence and leadership through improved access to technology and digital services.
Beyond agriculture, improved connectivity is also strengthening access to healthcare and social protection services in remote regions. Telehealth systems and digital public services are being expanded to help communities that previously faced significant barriers in accessing essential support. Officials involved in the programme describe digital transformation as a key tool for promoting inclusive development and ensuring that remote populations are not left behind in Chile’s modernization efforts.
The Connected Communities initiative is supported through the Joint SDG Fund and implemented by several UN agencies in partnership with Chilean authorities and private-sector stakeholders. The programme reflects a broader effort to use digital innovation as a driver of sustainable development, economic resilience, and social inclusion across rural territories in Chile.
