Ontario is investing $4.4 million to support Indigenous students in accessing in-demand aviation careers through the First Nations Technical Institute. The funding will help rebuild the institute’s Aviation Training Centre, which was destroyed by fire four years ago, and expand training capacity to meet growing workforce demands in the aviation sector.
The new facility, currently under construction, will feature modern classrooms and a state-of-the-art flight simulator, enabling more students to receive high-quality, hands-on training. This initiative aims to reduce barriers to education, accelerate access to training, and equip Indigenous learners with the skills needed for well-paying careers in aviation and related industries.
This investment is part of Ontario’s broader $6.4 billion commitment to strengthening the postsecondary education system. The funding model includes additional support for Indigenous Institutes across the province, with plans to significantly increase operating funding and expand training opportunities in labour market-driven programs.
The aviation sector plays a crucial role in connecting remote and rural communities while supporting key industries such as emergency response, transportation and resource development. By investing in Indigenous-led education and training, the province aims to build a skilled workforce that can contribute to economic growth and community development.
Overall, the initiative reflects a continued effort to enhance access to education, promote workforce readiness and ensure long-term sustainability of postsecondary institutions while creating meaningful career pathways for Indigenous students.
