Belgium Provides New Funding to UNDP for Innovative and Sustainable Development Solutions

Dated: January 14, 2026

The Government of Belgium has announced a multiannual contribution of €30 million to the United Nations Development Programme’s core resources for the period 2025–2028, reinforcing its position as one of UNDP’s top core donors. This flexible funding will enable UNDP to respond quickly to crises while supporting long-term development planning, at a time when global challenges are intensifying and human development progress is showing signs of fragility.

Belgium emphasized that core voluntary contributions are essential for allowing UNDP to carry out its mandate effectively, safeguard its normative role and contribute coherently to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The new funding comes at a pivotal moment and will support the implementation of UNDP’s Strategic Plan 2026–2029, which prioritizes effective governance, strengthened crisis resilience and action on growing environmental and planetary pressures.

Belgium’s long-standing partnership with UNDP has played a significant role in addressing poverty and inequality, strengthening resilience in fragile and least developed countries, advancing climate action through improved national reporting, and tackling gender-based violence. In recent years, Belgian support has contributed to rebuilding energy infrastructure and demining efforts in Ukraine, emergency assistance for health care and waste services in Gaza, and biodiversity conservation in Burundi.

This renewed commitment ensures that Belgium’s partnership with UNDP continues to drive innovative and sustainable development solutions, strengthen accountability and transparency, and deliver meaningful impact in communities facing the greatest challenges worldwide.
