The Government of Canada, through FedNor, is investing $1,050,000 to support two major initiatives led by NORCAT in Northern Ontario, as announced by Viviane Lapointe, Member of Parliament for Sudbury, on behalf of Minister Patty Hajdu. These investments aim to drive innovation, skill development, and the growth of small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the region.
Of the total funding, $700,000 will support NORCAT’s Regional Artificial Intelligence Initiative. This program provides advisory services and financial support to SMEs for the adoption, integration, and commercialization of AI technologies. By addressing skill gaps and boosting in-house AI expertise, the initiative helps companies improve productivity, efficiency, and competitiveness. The funding will also cover capital purchases such as servers and cloud infrastructure, as well as targeted training, commercialization expenses, and professional services.
The remaining $350,000 will fund the renewal of NORCAT’s Innovation Acceleration Program (IAP) for an additional three years. The IAP offers financial assistance to SMEs to access technical and business resources, enabling investments in materials, equipment, labor expansion, research and development, commercialization, and market growth. This support helps businesses enhance operations, strengthen competitiveness, and create new jobs in Northern Ontario.
Together, these investments are expected to modernize and expand more than 35 SMEs, positioning the region at the forefront of emerging industries and technologies. The initiatives align with the Government of Canada’s Prosperity and Growth Strategy for Northern Ontario, which emphasizes the importance of building economic development capacity in municipalities and Indigenous communities.
Government and NORCAT leaders emphasized the broader impact of the funding. Minister Patty Hajdu highlighted the role of these investments in maintaining Canada’s global industrial leadership and supporting homegrown talent and organizations. MP Viviane Lapointe stressed that focusing on innovation ensures that local enterprises in Greater Sudbury, a hub for natural resource extraction, remain competitive internationally. NORCAT CEO Don Duval noted that the funding will enable continued support for technology, entrepreneurship, and skill development across the region.
The funding is provided through FedNor’s Regional Economic Growth Through Innovation Fund (REGI) and the Regional Artificial Intelligence Initiative, both designed to help Northern Ontario businesses expand into new markets, adopt new technologies, and strengthen their long-term economic prospects.
