Jamaica’s Digital Future Begins in the Classroom

Dated: August 25, 2026

Jamaica is moving toward a more digitally connected education system through a United Nations-supported programme designed to strengthen learning, teaching, school management, nutrition and data systems.

The Government of Jamaica and United Nations SDG Joint Programme on Digital Transformation for Education is entering its final year of implementation, with support from the Joint SDG Fund and development partners including the European Union and its member states.

The programme brings together UNICEF, UNESCO, the World Food Programme and the Food and Agriculture Organization to support Jamaica’s national education transformation agenda. Its approach focuses on six connected areas: digital learning, digital schools, teacher transformation, digital school feeding, digital food systems and data governance.

The initiative goes beyond providing schools with computers and internet access. It aims to help students access quality digital learning resources, enable teachers to use technology more effectively and give school leaders reliable data to improve decision-making.

Digital tools are also being used to strengthen school feeding programmes and connect schools with local agricultural producers. Better data systems can help policymakers identify inequalities, improve resource allocation and make education services more efficient.

Pilot schools are expected to serve as demonstration sites where different elements of the digital education ecosystem can work together. The experience gained from these schools could help guide wider national reforms and provide lessons for other countries pursuing digital transformation.

With the programme scheduled to conclude in July 2027, the focus is increasingly shifting from establishing systems to demonstrating measurable results. Sustainability will depend on integrating successful innovations into government policies, budgets and everyday educational practices.

For Jamaica, digital transformation in education is also an investment in the country’s future workforce. Equipping students with digital skills and providing teachers and schools with modern tools can support inclusion, resilience, stronger institutions and improved learning outcomes.

The programme aims to ensure that digital innovation becomes a lasting part of Jamaica’s education system while contributing to the country’s progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals.
