The African Development Bank (AfDB), in collaboration with the Government of Togo, has conducted an institutional capacity-building workshop and fiduciary clinic aimed at improving the performance of development projects and strengthening public sector implementation capacity.
Held in Lomé from 18–21 May 2026, the training brought together around 60 participants from project implementation units, the Ministry of Finance and Budget, sectoral ministries, and other public institutions involved in AfDB-financed operations. The initiative was organized by AfDB’s Capacity Development Department in coordination with its country office in Togo and other technical departments.
The workshop focused on key fiduciary areas including financial management, procurement, and disbursement processes. Participants engaged in technical sessions, case studies, and experience-sharing exercises designed to reflect real implementation challenges and improve understanding of AfDB operational procedures.
According to AfDB officials, strengthening institutional capacity is essential to ensure that mobilized resources translate into measurable development results. The training emphasized improving project execution, enhancing accountability, and accelerating delivery of outcomes on the ground.
Togo’s active AfDB portfolio currently exceeds €497 million, covering 27 national and regional projects across sectors such as transport, agriculture, energy, governance, and social development. These investments are intended to support national development priorities and improve living conditions across the country.
Government representatives highlighted that the initiative aligns with efforts to improve institutional performance and increase the efficiency of project implementation systems. Strengthening absorption capacity and financial management was identified as a key priority for improving development outcomes.
Participants noted that the practical training sessions, particularly those on financial audit and disbursement, were highly valuable in improving their understanding of development partner procedures. They also emphasized the importance of applying the knowledge gained to improve project reporting and execution.
The workshop’s recommendations are expected to guide future technical assistance from the African Development Bank in Togo, reinforcing ongoing efforts to enhance public sector efficiency and development impact.
