The Government of Canada has announced a federal investment of more than $5.8 million to improve regional wastewater infrastructure in the Rural Municipality of St. Clements, Manitoba. The funding will support the expansion and modernization of the East Selkirk Wastewater Treatment Lagoon to strengthen community services and support future growth.
The investment is being provided through the Build Communities Strong Fund, a national infrastructure initiative aimed at supporting projects related to housing, economic development, climate adaptation, and community resilience across Canada.
The East Selkirk wastewater project will expand treatment capacity, upgrade the system to allow year-round discharge while meeting environmental requirements, and construct a new outfall connection to the Red River. These improvements are expected to enhance wastewater management, protect local waterways, and provide more reliable services for residents and nearby communities.
Officials highlighted that modern infrastructure is essential for sustainable regional development. The upgraded wastewater system will help accommodate population growth, reduce pressure on aging septic systems, and create a stronger foundation for long-term community planning.
The project also supports environmental protection by improving wastewater treatment processes and reducing risks to the surrounding ecosystem. Strengthening infrastructure along the Red River corridor is considered an important step toward building more resilient communities.
The Build Communities Strong Fund represents a major federal investment in infrastructure development across Canada, supporting projects that improve quality of life, encourage economic growth, and prepare communities for future challenges. The St. Clements wastewater upgrade demonstrates the importance of investing in essential services that benefit both current residents and future generations.
