Local public stakeholders in Türkiye have strengthened their understanding of responsible business conduct and its role in preventing child labour in seasonal hazelnut harvesting.
The seminars focused on responsible business conduct, child labour prevention, international labour standards, decent work, social protection, job security, adequate wages, non-discrimination, coordinated local responses and responsible agricultural supply chains.
The International Labour Organization Office for Türkiye organized three provincial seminars in Ordu, Giresun and Sakarya between 11 and 13 May 2026. The events brought together representatives from public institutions, local administrations, agricultural and trade chambers, workers’ and employers’ organizations, universities and civil society organizations.
Participants discussed how responsible business conduct can help address the root causes of child labour in seasonal agriculture. These include informality, job insecurity, lack of social protection, inadequate working conditions and limited access to decent employment opportunities.
The sessions also highlighted the role of international labour standards in protecting children’s rights and promoting decent work in local communities. Particular attention was given to the ILO Tripartite Declaration of Principles concerning Multinational Enterprises and Social Policy, which provides guidance for governments, employers and workers’ organizations.
Discussions emphasized that eliminating child labour requires a holistic approach involving public institutions, employers, workers’ organizations, local actors and supply chain stakeholders. Participants also explored operational challenges, prevention strategies and opportunities for stronger coordination at the local level.
The seminars aimed to strengthen institutional engagement and promote responsible business practices in agricultural supply chains. They also supported efforts to develop coordinated and preventive responses to child labour risks in seasonal hazelnut harvesting.
The initiative contributes to Türkiye’s commitment to eliminating child labour under Alliance 8.7, where the country participates as a Pathfinder Country.
The seminars were organized through two projects focused on eliminating the worst forms of child labour in seasonal hazelnut harvesting in Türkiye. These projects are funded by the Association of Chocolate, Biscuit and Confectionery Industries of Europe and Ferrero.
